Being a possession of the Earls of Desmond it was damaged during the Desmond Rebellion of After the rebellion it was granted to Sir Walter Raleigh.

By Lismore Castle was described as being 'broken and ruined'. After Raleigh had been locked up in the Tower of London for high treason he sold it to Sir Richard Boyle, Earl of Cork, who entirely rebuil it in Richard's son; Robert Boyle, the famous scientist, was born in the castle in In Lismore Castle withstood an 8-day siege by Confederate Catholics.

In they returned, led by Lord Castlehaven, and managed to take the castle after which it was ransacked. By it was still described as ruinous.

In the 's the 2nd Earl of Cork rebuilt it but never made it his home. Through marriage the castle went to the Cavendish family, who were Dukes of Devonshire, in The succesive dukes all carried out improvements to it.

The 6th Duke of Devonshire; William George Spencer Cavendish, completely rebuilt Lismore castle as a 'quasi-feudal ultra-regal fortress' in Gothic style from on.

It is the result of his rebuilding that we see today. The principal apartments were decorated with fretwork plaster ceilings, tapestry hangings, embroidered silks and velvet.

The castle eventually descended to The 3rd Earl of Burlington and 4th Earl of Cork , who was a noted influence on Georgian architecture and is usually known in architectural histories as the Earl of Burlington.

Lismore featured in the Cromwellian wars when, in , a force of Catholic confederacy commanded by Lord Castlehaven sacked the town and castle.

Some restoration was carried out by The 1st Earl of Burlington and 2nd Earl of Cork — to make it habitable again, but neither he nor his successors lived at Lismore.

Their son, the 5th Duke — , carried out improvements at Lismore, notably the bridge across the River Blackwater in which was designed by Cork-born architect Thomas Ivory.

The 6th Duke — , commonly known as 'the Bachelor Duke', was responsible for the castle's present appearance. He began transforming the castle into a fashionable 'quasi-feudal ultra-regal fortress' as soon as he succeeded his father in , engaging the architect William Atkinson from to to rebuild the castle in the Gothic style , using cut stone shipped over from Derbyshire.

Lismore was always the Bachelor Duke's favourite residence, but as he grew older his love for the place developed into a passion.

In he engaged his architect Sir Joseph Paxton , the designer of The Crystal Palace , to carry out improvements and additions to the castle on a magnificent scale — so much so that the present skyline is largely Paxton's work.

At this time, J. Crace of London, the leading maker of Gothic Revival furniture, and his partner, the leading architect A.

Pugin , were commissioned to transform the ruined chapel of the old Bishop's Palace into a medieval-style banqueting hall, with a huge perpendicular stained-glass window, choir-stalls and Gothic stenciling on the walls and roof timbers.

Pugin also designed other chimney-pieces and furnishings in the castle and, after his death in , Crace continued to supply furnishings in the Puginesque manner.

In , the Cavendish family sponsored a new bridge over the Blackwater, which replaced the one built in This new construction followed designs by Charles Tarrant and was done by E.

Nagle and C. It became the home of a younger son of the 9th Duke , Lord Charles Cavendish , who married Adele Astaire , the sister and former dancing partner of Fred Astaire.

After her husband's death in and her remarriage in , Adele continued to use the castle until shortly before her own death in In the last years of his tenure it was made available for short-term rent.

The 12th Duke , who succeeded to the title in , continues to live primarily on the family's Chatsworth estate.

His son and heir, Lord Burlington , has an apartment in the castle, has been given management of it, [3] and in converted the derelict west range into a contemporary art gallery, known as Lismore Castle Arts.

The remainder of the interior is not open to the public, but is available for hire by groups of up to twenty-three visitors.

The castle features gardens, which are open to the public. The upper garden is a 17th-century walled garden, [4] while much of the informal lower garden was designed in the 19th century.

Please be sure to pass along my very best wishes to Lord and Lady Burlington and to Denis and the entire staff at Lismore Castle.

Everything was grand, the gardens are magnificent, the art area is a wonderful idea, we loved looking at all the wonderful pictures and reading up on Lismore and most of all we all felt really "at home" in Lismore Castle.

I am still thinking about your vegetables, which says a lot. The scones and sponge cake on the last day were the best ever except for the chocolate cake at tea on Wednesday.

You did an amazing job with special requests birthday dinner and summer pudding, none of which were on the menu.

And the salmon! And your flawless timing! It couldn't have been better! No challenge was too much, no suggestion was too crazy.

From day one, it felt like we were part of the castle team, working together to ensure our guests had an experience that none of them will ever forget.

Thank you. The staff is expert at making one and all feel that they are home, being cosseted and cared for like no other place I have ever been.

Under the watchful eye of Mr. Denis Nevin, all is done to perfection. The food is outstanding, the castle so very comfortable, there is not a request that cannot be met, and the whole experience is one of sheer delight.

This year will be our sixteenth trip there, and we cannot wait to go! Is this a romantic place or activity that you would suggest for couples?

Would you send a friend who is visiting for the first time to this place or activity? Thanks for helping! Share another experience before you go.

What travelers are saying 4. I have visited my share of castles in Ireland, and I can tell you, these rank among the highest, even if they are not the most famous.

Very beautiful garden, allowing excellent views on the castle. What a beautiful place to visit. We visited there yesterday afternoon and thought it was delightful.

It is obvious the love the owners and gardeners have for nature and plants. Such varied flowers and Rhododendrones are fantastic, garden is well kept and big.

There are some modern art sculptures, including two pieces of Berlin Wall with graffiti. At sunny day it's a great pleasure to visit. Full view.
