Alec B Super Reviewer. Jun 17, Grand Prix is considered one of the greatest films made about professional auto racing, mainly due to it's numerous camera angles, a variety of different and thoroughly captivating split screens as well as some of the most intense and engaging driving A lot of it actually recorded at real Formula One races sequences recorded on film.

There is a lot to like here in the racing elements and a majority of the film is the races, however a downside is the bland and mindless romantic stories tied inbetween them.

The only interesting element is the dilema of risk-taking and what you have to give to compete in such dangerous professions, the men involved all make many sacrifices as well as their loved ones.

The cast all does a good job and Toshiro Mifune as well as many others make up the great supporting cast as well.

For the driving sequences captured alone, the film is worth a watch. Chris B Super Reviewer. Mar 16, As the showpiece film for Formula One, Grand Prix is a cult favorite in the racing community.

The racing sequences are tremendously exciting, shot from inside, in the air, along the track, in a chase car, pretty much everywhere that a camera can go.

The fact that most of it was shot at high speed in real life, much of it at actual Formula One races, gives it a very authentic look.

Shot in brilliant 70mm Panavision, it takes you inside the cars and feels more like an actual race than a film.

I was fortunate enough to see it screened in 70mm last night and have to imagine that's the only way this film should be watched. Let's start with the obvious flaws this movie has.

It's schlocky. The dialogue and plot elements are very basic and kind of dull. You've got the Italian legend, the Italian prodigy, the American veteran, and the English dark horse.

You've got a couple love interests and a couple temptresses that work to lure the racers away from their focus. It kind…. You will get all the style of the sixties, combined with exciting racing scenes.

Today, such a movie would be impossible to produce: simply too dangerous. At that time, Formula One was not comparable to today, more Battle Royale than motor sport.

The use of camera to put you in different perspectives for the different races should be taught in every class. Real chest-beating BIG cinema of a kind we hardly ever see this days - sprawling mosaic character drama giving us an occasional breather from the most intense racing footage ever, tied to the sleek caskets speeding within these courses inviting potential disasters that just add edges to those character moments.

Obviously the latter is what everyone myself included goes to the movie for, but I can't imagine Grand Prix without that cliched storytelling anyway Anyway, the sound, the cutting, even the cheesy mosaic split-screening, it all gets my heart pumping on and off for 3 hours and when movie theaters come back pls , we need a 70mm showing of this somewhere near me.

During lockdown, I managed to fall in love with motorsport, specifically Formula 1, and wanted to engross in everything and anything. And while I was video surfing, watching all the highlights, team radios and Lando Norris streams, I came across this film.

I found this film very interesting to see what would it be like to race in F1 during that time, especially when I saw how safe it is nowadays.

And it's really awesome to see these legendary drivers in scenes with the actors, and the camera work in the race scenes are really innovative and ahead of their time.

The acting can be for the most part, half decent. Some actors I can really see being drivers and…. A tremendous technical achievement and nothing more.

But those sequences only account for an hour and change of an unreasonable three-hour runtime and the characters are so one-note and uninteresting that they cannot combat the tedium.

This was the industry's misguided attempt at giving audiences a reason to come to the cinema and pay exorbitant prices for the privilege.

The idea of just making really good movies never seemed to occur to anyone, so they instead made a bunch of mediocre to outright bad ones, made them really long, and added an overture and entr'acte for good measure to give people the feeling they were attending live theater.

This was utterly mind blowing. The fact that this came out in and is this technically good is insane. The racing scenes are the best I have ever seen.

Not only all practical but also incredibly creative. People talk about for being ahead of its time but this equals it and goes beyond in my opinion.

This movie captures the golden age of F1, both the good in the bad. The otherworldliness of 60s F1, and the terrifying nature of it.

Yves Montand is great in this movie. It does run a little long, but it's almost necessary since it takes place over an entire season.

Great cast, great racing scenes, I never get tired of seeing Graham Hill randomly appear in the movie. One of my favorites ever.

Genuinely one of the most puzzling films I've ever watched. There's such visceral, passionate filmmaking in the racing scenes and a lot of fluff stringing them together.

You watch the opening ten minutes of this film and explain to me why an hour later you've still not seen the second race of the film but are watching two characters fish while comparing marriage to catching trout??

Grand Prix : Hey man, what's going on? Yeah I'm a movie about fast cars but also check out all this melodrama stemming from some complex interpersonal dynamics between these four elite Formula One drivers!

Oh and also! Who's going to win the climactic final race to decide who's crowned World Champion?! Is it the aging French former champion who's becoming disillusioned with the sport, his marriage, and life in general?

Is it the cocky American who's been having a bad run of luck, jumping from team to team in the hopes of recovering some of his former glory and ultimately landing with a inexperienced but determined Japanese team helmed by Toshiro Mifune?

Is it the hotshot Italian newcomer, who made…. Pretty self-explanatory, "older films" must've come out at least 20 years ago. Primarily based on director's influences and recommendations.
